A Desolate Wasteland
The Wastes replaces the Overworld with a harsh desert environment. Deserts and Badlands make up the majority of the surface, the Warm Oceans have dried up, and Windswept Savannas serve as a grim reprieve.
This data pack was created for the Wastes SMP hosted by emchmu. THis server features over 40 Minecraft creators who survived in this world for only 30 real days.
The Desert Awaits
The Wastes features only a few of the biomes you may be familiar with in vanilla, but care has been taken to try and ensure that most vanilla blocks are accessible. Wood may be scarce on the surface, but many structures now include Saplings in their chests, and these can even be obtained from Trial Spawners. Water on the surface has dried up, but some can still be found in the caves below the dried ocean basins.
Biomes
Global Behavior

- All Villages are abandoned/Zombie variants
- Farm animals and Horses can spawn on Sand, Red Sand, and Terracotta
- Husks, Parched, and Camel Husk Jockeys can spawn in all biomes
- There are no rivers or riverbeds, and Warm Oceans are dried up
- There are no aquifers
- Caves tend to be more common and expansive, stretching from the surface to the bottom of the world
- Ores are unchanged from vanilla (but some have been added to the Blackstone Layer)
- Using Bonemeal on Grass Blocks in any biome produces noise-based random flowers, similar to vanilla Flower Forests
- Fossils made of Bone Blocks generate on the surface of all biomes, except the Windswept Savanna. Unlike Nether Fossils, these do not have Dried Ghasts
Desert

- Feature two distinct regions: Granite Fields and Cacti Forests
- Granite Fields have frequent spikes made of granite that jut out from the ground
- Cacti Forests have much taller and more densely populated Cacti. Some of these Cacti can have Creaking Hearts buried underneath them, spawning Creaking at night
- Short and regular Cacti generate throughout the Desert
- Large "boulders" of petrified wood dot the biome in the form of Stripped Oak Logs, Dripstone Blocks, and Blocks of Quartz
Eroded Badlands

- Red Sand lines much of the lowlands
- There are sparse Cacti here, but none with Creaking Hearts
- The Terracotta bands extends into the caves below
Windsept Savanna

- Acacia Trees generate with no leaves
- The terrain is uneven and mountainous
Warm Ocean

- Has frequent spikes made of Prismarine and Sea Lanterns that jut out from the ground
- There are lots of Sea Pickles and Dry Grasses on the ground
- Some areas have forests of Dead Corals
- Warm and Cold Ocean Ruins generate here
- Beached Shipwrecks and Buried Treasure generates here
- The caves below Warm Oceans have large puddles of Water surrounded by Mud, and are populated by Sugar Cane
- Using Bone Meal in Water in this biome produces Corals
Mushroom Caves

- A new Cave Biome
- The ground is made of Mycelium and Dirt
- Small and large Red and Brown Mushrooms fill the biome
- There are invisible disks of Light that illuminate the ground
- Mooshrooms spawn here
- Unlike the vanilla Mushroom Fields, hostile mobs can spawn here
The Blackstone Layer
Rather than ending with a Bedrock floor at Y=-64, the Wastes dimension extends down to Y=-128. The entire area below -64 has been transformed into the Blackstone Layer. While Ores in the upper areas of the world may be unchanged, additional ore features have been implemented to fill this dangerous locale.

- The cave walls are made of Blackstone
- The entire Blackstone Layer is Deep Dark biome, with common Ancient Cities
- There are blobs of Calcite, Smooth Basalt, and Magma Blocks
- Many ores generate commonly here, including blocks of Raw Iron, Raw Gold, and Raw Copper, but always buried
- There are common Lava Lakes and Lava Springs
- Unlike the vanilla Deep Dark, hostile mobs can spawn here
- Frogs spawned here are Cold variants
